Narrative

So this is what i have so far for My narrative final

The book I'm reading for my final is H.P. Lovecraft's "Dreams of Terror and Death". I'm doing 1 cover, with oil on canvas. And maybe 3 digital illustrations to go inside the book.

This thing is a Gug monster that a man named Carter found in his exploration along with the ghouls in the underground caves of the dreamworld. It's in a loooong dark cave which has some sort of an anbient glow throughout. Most of the inhabitants of the cave cannot take direct sun light. This thing stepped out of a hole and Lovecraft gave an indepth description of him/her. The front paws are about 2 feet wide, just to get a reference for size. Anyway, I'm sure no one really cares about any of that since you probably havent read the book.

This is a digital sketch i did for the cover I'm planning to do in oil. I chose to use a ghoul to represent the book as a whole because Lovecraft uses ghouls a lot in his book. Lovecraft has a man named Richard Upton Pickman from one of the stories make a reappearance in a later story as a ghoul. So ghouls seem to be an important part of Lovecraft's dreamworld.

And this is what i have so far on the canvas. It's just the underpainting, made with a lot of gamsol. I plan to make him a lot skinnier and F'ed up looking when i lay on the fat paint.

thanks for looking, i'll update this thing when i get more done

art post? WIP

so for nature drawing class which i hate, our teacher gave us a 12 hour assignment over spring break. Not that we have to spend exactly 12 hours on it, but that she expects double the time spent due to the fact that we wont be in class for one of the weeks, cuz we'll all be on vacation... The assignments were free, meaning they're self guided. I decided to go the illustration route and do what i've always liked doing, create my own culture/race/species of whatever creature, in this case human, all from memory (actually i used the mirror for some). I thought i'd include some flowers and shells done from life in their to make it fit in more with the class heheh which by the way i hate.

well here's the face of the girl character

she's supposed to be muscular with big hands. her right hand isnt big enough though

we all had to bring this into class the day we got back from break, which we spent at the zoo which was cool, but carrying around my portfolio wasnt cool. No one in the class actually finished their assignment, most people had spent about 3 hours on theirs. and on that day i was probably about 40% done.

and then for the week after we had to bring in a second piece to go along with it. This one, just the usual 6 hours per week drawing. this is what i have so far. im definitely not bringing it in finished to class which i hate

and then the face

wanna know a secret? i hate that class

this is what i spent 2 sleepless nights on

this is for nature drawing
we had to "explore" textures. and like draw them on a piece of paper or something crazy like that. I asked if i could include a self portrait into it since i've been starved for some (fine art-ish) figurative work lately. none of my other classes really call for it

Im gonna go back later and erase out some stuff in the background all sargent style

PS - in case you dont know, that's a towel over my head. i would like to say this makes me look like jesus, but most would probably say it looks more like mary. if someone decides to vandalize this with a sharpy, make sure you get the goatee in first.

PSS - thanks to katrina for letting me take her plant hostage.

something i started working on towards the end of winter break.
my roommate's only reaction was "wow you must have been REALLY bored". i mean i go to art school and it's a painting...I guess I'll take that as negative feedback?

anyway this was really fun to do, no restrictions, just wanted to do SOME sort of painting or drawing over the break. As i was doing this, i felt my sanity slowly returning.

and a close up

when i was coming back to mica, i had too much stuff to bring, and this was still wet, so i left it behind. next time im back home i'll bring it back with me and finish it when i have the time and willpower

final number 1: FINISHED!

worked on this saturday, sunday, and this morning...

the assignment given was very broad...just a figure in a space.
the challenge i set for myself was to have a large scale drawing with
figures completely from my head, which is something we're gonna be
tested on today. I always find a way to fuck myself over for
finals by giving myself too much work though. Last year, i had a
huge ass drawing that spanned three walls of my bedroom....big mistake,
but turned out well in the end. this one is no where near as big,
but still a pain in the butt

and since im completely obsessed with my new camera, i decided to take pictures of the progress of this drawing.

this is the sketch in my sketchbook

and the finish

wow it looks like crap in this picture...sorry
also, the two sheets of paper arent aligned hahah

PS - i already see some anatomy issues i'm gonna go back and fix...but i have till 4PM.....should I sleep?
I did this in protest of the new movie Aeon Flux starring Charlize Theron.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/aeon_flux/large.html
Just another example of the "Hollywood does it again" flic where they care more about business (selling to the widest possible audience) instead of art (the aesthetic narrative value of the film). I was a big fan of the original cartoon, for it's strange, creapy, uneasy tension filled plot lines. Unlike in the crapped up Hollywood version, Aeon Flux is in fact very skinny, unnatractive, and extremely badass. But in this new movie, they seem to have cast a puffy cheecked all american goody goody girl for this role. Another decision by Hollywood purely based on business for Theron's recent popularity boost. It makes me angry how the only movies these days with a high budget and can actually afford a good production, are the ones that are dumbed down and crapped up in order to make the most profit.

I am extremely interested in film work, and maybe one day when i'm older (most likely way older), i would like to direct a film of my own. But god only knows what amount of money it would take to make me crack, and turn my "art" into a consumer product. Forcing me to edit out swear words, nudity, and blood, just to get a PG13 rating in order to get more people into the seats. Something needs to be done to fix that. It only seems to happen in America though. Europoean and Asian films seem to be very out there and controversial, and they actually let the viewer use some of their intellect.

Sorry i just like to complain

Here's my friend's tattoo design he asked me to....design. He's already gotten 3 hours worth of it tattooed onto him, with the entire thing outlined. Right now he's healing up so he can go back to get it filled in and do the shading and whatnot. The tattoo artist had to make some proportion changes and a few other things, and he said that he wants it to go in a magazine when it's done.

STB are his mother's initials, and DDB are his sister's.

I'll post a pic of the actual tattoo when it's finished.

My dog peed in the house for the first time in months last night, and my brother yelled at her, causing her to crawl away into a corner and pee some more. When i saw her to feed her this morning, she was just generally afraid of everyone. We've yelled at her before, and she got over it. Well she peed like 4 more times throughout the day, every time my brother would go up to her. We've slowly been able to get her to trust us all over again, but she's not eating her treats, anyone know what could be wrong? We've always thought she might have been abused before we got her, maybe that has something to do with what's happening.

wow, i really missed my cousin today. I was looking through some of my old CDs and i found an album he made on his sampler. Since he was an aspiring musician, he had given me and my brother a bunch of his music, but i seem to have lost them all. I sat there listening to his voice and just got flash back after flash back of memories with him. Sean was there with me and i think he was a little weirded out that i was playing Jason's music, but he didnt say anything about it. I wanna show my parents just so they can listen to his music, but he wrote "suck my cock" on the CD, hahah. Maybe I'll scratch it out...but that would be desecrating something he gave me....idk. I'll probably copy it.

My family still prays the rosary every night even to this day. Not sure when the tradition will break, but it doesnt seem likely to be any time soon. Rosaries are starting to get on my nerves, but i know it helps my mom and dad a lot that i sit there and pray with them.

On a different subject, I'm getting more and more excited about getting back to MICA. I havent talked to my roommate since we left last spring, cuz he dont have a cell phone, and he's never on AIM. I know there are ways of contacting him, but i think it'll all work out near the end of summer. I mean...we GOTTA talk about room prep right?

Anyway, I'm also a little nervous cuz i still havent returned the blue wires the school gave me to hook my computer up to the internet, and my old roommate gave me his (in a hurry to catch his flight), trusting that I would return it. God i hope they dont fine me, and i REALLY hope they dont fine him... man i'm an asshole. Anyone know if those blue ethernet wires from the office of technology have due dates? Please lemme know. Oh...and I also didnt return my keys for the Commons. I should really mail those back. idk...i'm weird.

I'm planning to get a TV/DVD player for our apartment this fall. I think i promised Neal I'd get one. They're pretty cheap nowadays. Also getting a digital camera. Man I'm gonna be spending a lot of money.

Oh..I got new glasses (man this entry is all over the place). I realized that only adults/old people wear those discreet, thin framed or no framed glasses. I looked like i was trying to be sophisticated. People think i'm a nerd. I can hardly read for christ sake. I lived through the whole "hey it's Harry Potter!" phase, and my sister's stupid friends asking me to do their homework. Just cuz an asian guy wears glasses doesnt mean he's president of chess club! Anyway, i went for those black framed glasses that people can actually see me wearing from a mile away. I like them a lot. I hope people dont see me next year and think, "whoa, Jeremy you got all emo!" Cuz i havent. In fact I'm happy as can be. Most of the time i feel the way my dog looks in my icon. In conclusion, I AM NOT EMO! I know what you're thinking, you want pics right? Well i've decided to wait till the school year begins to show everyone. I want it to be a surprise so that i can punch anyone in the ear who calls me EMO.

I think i'm forgetting something...there's a lot on my mind. But i'll leave it at that for now.

here's some stuff I've worked on the past few weeks. Really I
should have more to show, but I dont. I actually have some
sketches i did over the vacation that i have yet to scan in, but my
scanner isn't hooked up, and that would take some sort of effort.
I'll do it some time.

The theme in this one is circles.....Circles being the most energy
efficient shape in the universe, i wanted to do something pseudo
intellectual with an illustration, when really i know nothing about the
subject matter.

Still working on this one. This is a warrior with his fantastic
fighting team of deadly concubines. I tried to give the
characters in this illo some noticeable relationships and ranks and
personalities and whatnot. Like the grayish women with the
half-shaved heads are sort of the stealth group with light weight
leather armor. They might even be sisters. They are also
very conceited and consider themselves above the rest. There is
an albino woman who will have a bow/arrow, there are some young women
and older looking women. And the woman seated to the left of the
warrior is most likely not a concubine, but the head mistress.
Might add some more characters to make it more interesting.

Any tips/crits would be awesome.
finally got back to drawing. I havent drawn/painted/made anything all
summer long. not even a sketch. So i started something in photoshop for
the sake of my own sanity. Maybe...30-40% finished? Maybe less,
depending on whether or not i wanna add another figure in there
somewhere. Maybe a male, or some creapy little kids near the bottom. idk
IT'S OVAAAAAARRRRR

K, yesterday was my anticipated LAST class of the year which was painting. It didnt go by as slow as i anticipated it would be, seeing as how i'm so excited about summer. Plus i got a painting in the foundation show next year. The walk home from class was just pure happiness and relaxation.

Then i went over to Brown center with Kari to print our videos onto DV for the final grade while she worked on her final project. At about 2AM we stopped and drove off to Taco Bell, also picking up some grub for other people at the lab. I finished my stuff early, so i went back and picked up my ipod so i could finish my critical inquiry essay. I finished that up and Kari went to go sleep at the "Think Relax" room before her class started while i went over to Bunting to print off my essay.

There i ran into Annika from my elements/color class. I'd always known Annika was cool, but i never hung out with her before. I helped her out with her emac final due that day which was an awesome paper doll animation with a set and everything. She got it done just in time so it was all good. While it was burning i showed her a picture of the dog that's at my house right now (Seal) and we talked about her dog, and a whole lot of other stuff. We headed out cuz she had to go to class, and we stopped at the corner for a while to talk, and she gave me a big hug and we parted and she said "have fun with your dog."

This year couldn't have ended any better. So much stress and work throughout these past few weeks and having to deal with crappy classes and crappy teachers, and all-nighters up the ass cheeks. Now...it's just pure relaxation and excitement to go home to meet my new dog, and hang out with my old DRAMA-FREE friends back home, and start planning for EUROPE, or maybe L.A., not sure yet, but either way, it's gonna be an awesome summer.

Shit, i still gotta deal with move-out, and apartment damage fines, and cleanup, and packing.....oh well, i'm willing to do all that for now.

peace out
